Prayer flags, and what the wind does

A prayer printed on cloth is given to the wind, and the wind is expected to carry it onward.

Prayer flags carry printed text and are strung on ridges, bridges and rooftops. The five colours follow a fixed order and stand for the elements.

The cloth is temporary. The wind is not.

The belief is that the wind moves the prayer onward. The flags are not decoration, and they are not made to last: they fray and fade, and they are replaced.

Lungta, the wind horse, is the most common design, printed in blue, white, red, green and yellow, in that order.
