What they measure

IELTS and PTE both report listening, reading, writing and speaking, and both are accepted for many visas and admissions. They differ in how they are delivered and how speaking is assessed, so the better choice is usually the one whose format suits you.

Scores map to bands or to a scale; the score you need depends on your course or your visa, and the requirements change, so check the official source for your situation.

How to prepare

Take one full practice test under timed conditions before you do anything else. It tells you your real starting point and which section is costing you marks.

Then practise the format daily for short sessions rather than one long weekend: the test rewards familiarity with its tasks as much as general English. For writing, learn the structures the tasks expect. For speaking, record yourself and listen back.

On the day

Sleep, arrive early, and read the instructions twice. Manage the clock: candidates lose more marks to running out of time than to not knowing a word.

If you do badly, you can usually sit again — but give it a preparation cycle in between, not a week.

The one thing to take away

Test format beats vocabulary drills — practise the test you are sitting.

Always check the official source. Rates, fees and rules change.
